Sometimes creative learning opportunities take students off campus. Such is the case with eighth grader John Sinclair, pursuing a science internship at Bear Fight Center. Sinclair's present project is to use sophisticated software to map where Apollo missions have landed on the moon. He triangulates positions, marks craters and pinpoints landing spots. In doing so, Sinclair uses data collected from India's unmanned lunar probe, Chanrayaan I. The probe offers fresh data, as it operated until August 2009.
Researchers from the center recently published an article in Science magazine demonstrating evidence of water on the moon. Sinclair works under the guidance of Georgiana Kramer, planetary geologist.
"This is real-world work," said Sinclair, "I know that what I do will be put into a NASA database to be used by others. It makes me want to be as precise as possible."
Learning at Bear Fight helps him make important connections, says Sinclair.
"It opens so many doors," he said. "Science is like math - the more I know the better, It gives me a deeper understanding of the world."
